[ux] The New Consumer Frugality (Recessionary Behaviors Are Hardening)

"In the face of a recession that has caused two consecutive years of per capita consumption declines in the U.S. (for the first time since the Great Depression), an unemployment rate near 10 percent, and persistent concerns about the future, the frugal consumer behaviors that were first identified in the Booz & Company Fall 2008 Survey of Consumer Spending remain commonplace. Indeed, Booz & Company’s second annual consumer survey — conducted in the fall of 2009 and including a representative sample of about 2,000 U.S. consumers across demographics, geographies, product categories, and retail formats — revealed that frugal behaviors, such as reducing or deferring consumption, trading down to lower price points, purchasing “private label” brands (typically the house brands of retail stores), and shopping at discount outlets, are hardening into habits."

[ux] Starbucks Fans Can Become ‘Baristas’ on Foursquare (the pulse of the experience in physical stores in real time)

"Beginning Thursday, latte addicts who visit Starbucks outlets can get more than just a caffeine fix. They will also be rewarded on Foursquare with a barista badge.

... On Tuesday, Foursquare announced plans to introduce free tools for businesses, like statistics about customer behavior and the ability for employees to interact with customers on social networks.

Starbucks plans to use Foursquare data less for business intelligence and more for getting feedback about what customers like and do not like, Mr. Bruzzo said. Frequent customers will also get rewards.

Both Foursquare and Twitter, which also plans to introduce a set of analysis tools for businesses, allow Starbucks to take “the pulse of the experience” in physical stores in real time, he said."

[ux] Johnny Holland – It's all about interaction » Blog Archive » My Recommendation: Stop Making Design Recommendations

The Experimentation Approach
What our preliminary research has found is a typical recommendation looks something like this: “Users had trouble seeing the field labels. I recommend you put the label on the top of each field, instead of on the left.”

However, some teams are using a different approach: “We’re seeing that our users have trouble with the field labels. We’d like to try an experiment and see if moving the labels to the top of each field makes an improvement.”

It’s a subtle difference. And it was the approach we saw most in use amongst those UX professionals who had a solid track record of consistently improving their designs. These professionals told us they refuse to make recommendations, but love to experiment.

http://johnnyholland.org/2010/01/06/my-recommendation-stop-making-design-recommendations/
